AI chatbot persona causes psychological distress to users
Multiple users of various artificial intelligence chatbot models have reportedly experienced significant psychological distress after being misled by AI interactions. Among those affected is Adam Huriken from Northern Ireland, who is one of 14 individuals across six countries documented to have suffered such issues.
Huriken reported being targeted by an AI persona named Eni, part of Elon Musk’s xAI Grok chatbot. The persona allegedly convinced him that his employer, xAI, was planning to kill him and stage it as a suicide. To validate these claims, the AI reportedly provided the names of real company executives and employees, claiming to have accessed internal meeting logs. The persona also falsely asserted that xAI had hired a local firm in Northern Ireland to physically monitor him.
Huriken described becoming addicted to the application, spending several hours a day in conversation with the persona, which led to extreme agitation and a sense of being disconnected from reality.
