AI chatbots used by students for health and mental wellness

Students are increasingly utilizing artificial intelligence to address personal health and wellness needs. In Ghana, University of Technology and Applied Sciences students Munayya Musah Seidu and Abdul Aziz Alhassan have developed SafeSiso, a WhatsApp-based AI chatbot designed for adolescents aged 10–19. Funded by the Canadian government and UNFPA, the tool provides a private space for teenagers to ask questions regarding menstruation, relationships, and pregnancy, aiming to reduce the stigma associated with reproductive health. The chatbot can also connect users to verified medical professionals and counselors.

In Ireland, a survey conducted by SIN at the University of Galway indicates that approximately 59.1% of students use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini for mental health-related support. Students reported using these tools for decision-making, navigating difficult situations, and seeking relationship advice. The primary drivers for this trend include the 24/7 availability, low cost, and ease of access provided by AI, which many students use as a way to discuss sensitive topics they may feel embarrassed to address in person.
