AI chip industry demand shifts toward hyperscaler spending

The semiconductor industry is being shaped by surging demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure, with major players occupying distinct roles in the supply chain. Nvidia remains the dominant designer of GPUs used for AI training and execution, though it relies on TSMC for manufacturing. Nvidia is currently ramping up its Vera Rubin AI platform and collaborating with both TSMC and SK Hynix for advanced memory and design.

TSMC maintains a defensive market position as the world’s leading contract chip manufacturer, holding over 60% of the global foundry market and leading in 3-nanometer process technology. Meanwhile, the influence of China on semiconductor demand appears to be shifting. While China remains a factor, hyperscaler capital expenditure—forecast to reach $1.01 trillion by 2027—is becoming the primary driver of chip demand.

Key risks to the sector include China’s control over rare earth elements, rising debt associated with hyperscaler spending, and the geographic concentration of chip supply in Taiwan and South Korea.
