AI coding firms Cognition and Cursor report massive revenue growth

The AI coding sector is experiencing rapid revenue growth, led by companies like Cognition AI and Cursor.

Cognition AI, the creator of the autonomous coding agent Devin, reported approximately $900 million in annualized recurring revenue (ARR) as of August 2026. This represents a significant increase from $492 million in May 2026. Despite this revenue, the San Francisco-based startup expects to spend roughly $800 million in cash this year, primarily to lease NVIDIA servers for model training and operations. Cognition has raised over $2.5 billion to date and is reportedly in negotiations for a new funding round that could value the company between $40 billion and $45 billion. Its client base includes Goldman Sachs, Mercedes-Benz, and various US government entities.

Similarly, the AI coding editor Cursor has demonstrated explosive growth. After reaching $100 million in ARR in January 2025, the company’s annualized revenue run rate reportedly climbed to $2 billion by March 2026, and later reached a $4 billion run rate by June 2026. This trajectory represents a twentyfold increase in just 13 months, outpacing the early growth rates of major software platforms like Slack and Zoom.
