AI coding tools accelerate generation but create human review bottlenecks
The rapid advancement of AI coding assistants is significantly accelerating code generation, but creating new bottlenecks in the software development lifecycle. While tools can produce large volumes of code in minutes, the speed of human-led processes—such as code review, quality assurance, integration, and security auditing—remains relatively slow.
Data from a forthcoming MIT Sloan working paper indicates that while AI increases code activity, these gains do not translate one-for-one into increased software shipments. The productivity boost is most pronounced during mechanical coding tasks but diminishes at stages requiring human judgment. This imbalance risks overwhelming human reviewers, potentially leading to ‘rubber-stamping’ approvals to manage the influx of AI-generated content.
In response to these challenges, companies like GitHub are developing specialized tools, such as Copilot Code Review, which utilize ensembles of agents to assist in running builds, tests, and targeted checks to help bridge the gap between fast generation and slow verification.
