AI tools reshape jobs and productivity across Europe
Google’s ATLAS study examined 14.65 million AI interactions from the Gemini app, AI Mode and the Gemini API across more than 150 countries and 800 occupations. The researchers concluded that AI is used mainly as a support tool rather than a replacement for human work. In Austria a recent survey of 1,005 job‑seekers found that 50 % now use AI for application documents, up from 27 % two years earlier; 87 % use it for cover letters and 56 % for résumés. In Germany, Indeed recorded 288 new AI‑focused job titles in Q1 2026, accounting for 4.2 % of all jobs and with 59 % of those roles outside traditional technical occupations. A Swiss study reported AI‑skill job ads rising to 25,000 positions—1.8 % of vacancies—while entry‑level roles are being eliminated. Another study of experienced developers showed that use of AI coding assistants makes them on average 19 % slower, despite a strong perception of increased productivity. Overall, AI adoption is broad but shallow, touching a large share of occupations while primarily augmenting specific tasks such as research, drafting or learning.
