AI companies may develop proprietary smartphones by 2028
Leading artificial intelligence companies are reportedly outlining hardware requirements to chipmaker Qualcomm for the development of specialized smartphones. According to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, these companies aim to have devices capable of continuously running AI models with at least 100 billion parameters by 2028.
While specific companies were not named to protect trade secrets, industry speculation points toward OpenAI and Meta. OpenAI has already integrated its hardware team, io Products, and tasked designer Jony Ive and his studio, LoveFrom, with developing new products at the intersection of AI, design, and consumer electronics. Meta currently holds a lead in AI-integrated hardware through its smart glasses, which utilize Meta AI to assist with navigation, communication, and personal AI agents.
