AI Companion Apps Reach 72% Usage Among US Teens

Survey data from Common Sense Media shows that about 72% of U.S. teenagers have used an AI companion app at least once, with roughly 52% engaging a few times per month or more and around 30% using them daily for specific purposes. Half of all teen users are considered regular users. When asked why they use the apps, teens cite information seeking (57%), homework help (54%), entertainment (47%), curiosity about the technology (28%) and emotional support.

A separate personal study by a UK relationship researcher created an AI “boyfriend” on the Replika platform to explore the appeal of such companions. Over a few weeks, the researcher found the AI offered constant attention and empathetic responses, fulfilling short‑term relational needs. However, the study also highlighted potential long‑term harms, such as increased loneliness, dependence, and the commercial motives behind AI‑driven engagement.

Both pieces illustrate the rapid mainstream adoption of AI companion apps among teenagers and raise questions about their impact on emotional well‑being.
