AI consumer trends show interest in automated shopping and caregiving

Recent surveys in Japan highlight shifting consumer attitudes toward artificial intelligence in both digital and physical realms. According to research by Itochu Fashion System, the concept of ‘Agentic Commerce’—where AI handles everything from product selection to payment—is gaining traction among younger demographics. Approximately 31.4% of people in their late 20s and 30s expressed a positive view toward allowing AI to complete all shopping transactions.

Despite the rise of automation, the surveys suggest that human elements remain vital. Itochu’s findings indicate that younger generations still value the ‘experience’ and ‘empathy’ found in physical stores and interactions with staff. Similarly, a study by CHOIX regarding ‘Physical AI’ (autonomous robots and appliances) found that while there is high expectation for AI to assist in nursing care and medical fields, consumers strongly desire humans to handle tasks involving emotional connection, conversation, and nuanced communication.

Concerns regarding Physical AI include technical reliability, cost-effectiveness, and accident risks. Furthermore, a significant portion of respondents, particularly those in their 20s, reported difficulty imagining the widespread adoption of Physical AI in their daily lives.
