Memory shortage driven by AI demand spikes component prices

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence data centers is causing a global memory shortage, driving up prices for DRAM and NAND flash components. According to IDC, memory prices have surged by more than 300% in a single year as manufacturers prioritize high-volume, high-margin orders from AI-focused clients.

This supply imbalance is impacting various consumer sectors. Smartphone prices are expected to rise, with an average selling price projected at 581 dollars in 2026. The shortage is particularly acute for entry-level devices. In the PC market, the high cost of DDR5 memory has led manufacturers like Gigabyte and MSI to release DDR4-compatible motherboards in markets like Japan, allowing users to repurpose older, cheaper memory.

Financial analysts suggest the crisis may be long-lasting. Barclays predicts that the DRAM market will not see relief until 2029 at the earliest, while Citi forecasts significant NAND shortages for SSDs in early 2028. Additionally, TrendForce expects general-purpose DRAM contract prices to continue rising through the end of 2026.
