AI data center boom drives nuclear energy demand and grid strain
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and data centers is driving a massive surge in electricity demand, creating significant pressure on the power grid and the nuclear energy sector.
In the United States, data centers consumed 176 terawatt-hours of electricity in 2023. To meet future needs, companies are increasingly turning to nuclear power for stable, carbon-free baseload energy. Constellation Energy has secured major long-term agreements, including a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft to restart the Crane Clean Energy Center. Other companies, such as Oklo, are advancing through regulatory processes for new reactor designs.
However, this growth presents environmental and infrastructural challenges. The 60 largest data centers currently under construction in the U.S. could produce an estimated 101.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. Additionally, the aging power grid faces a bottleneck; over 1,300 GW of generation capacity is currently waiting in interconnection queues, as the existing transmission infrastructure struggles to keep pace with the localized, high-density energy demands of the AI boom.
