AI data centers face growing backlash over resources and pollution

Public opposition to AI data centers is growing due to concerns regarding resource consumption, environmental impact, and economic shifts. These facilities require massive amounts of electricity, water, and specialized hardware like GPUs, which critics argue can drive up consumer costs for electronics and increase utility prices for local residents.

In Arizona, the issue has become a political flashpoint. Attorney General Kris Mayes has called for a moratorium on data center development, citing high electricity and water demands. A poll by Noble Predictive Insights indicates that 57% of registered Arizona voters oppose large-scale projects, with many supporting limits on development to protect local infrastructure.

Environmental and social justice concerns are also surfacing. In Tennessee, Elon Musk’s xAI is facing legal action over allegations that its data centers have increased air pollution in surrounding predominantly Black neighborhoods. Critics note that while these centers provide temporary construction jobs, they offer minimal long-term employment once operational.
