AI demand drives optical component shortages and photonic innovation

Surging data-center traffic driven by AI queries has created acute shortages of high-speed optical components, forcing cloud builders to expand their vendor pools from two or three suppliers to as many as five to seven specialized manufacturers. This supply chain shift is reshaping data-center architectures as companies seek to mitigate physical bottlenecks.

Major networking and semiconductor firms are reporting significant growth linked to this demand. Arista Networks achieved its first $3 billion quarter with a 38% year-over-year increase, while Cisco reported a 28% increase in networking segment revenues and three new hyperscale AI design wins. Other companies, including Applied Optoelectronics, Macom, MaxLinear, and Tower Semiconductor, have reported growth in silicon photonics and related hardware.

To address electrical and fiber bottlenecks, photonics provider Lightmatter is developing infrastructure to scale AI. Its Passage interconnect platform aims to overcome bandwidth constraints at the chip perimeter. Lightmatter, which has a $4.4 billion valuation, is working on near-package optics (NPO) and has joined the XPO Multi-Source Agreement to define next-generation optical transceiver standards for hyperscale data centers.
