AI demand drives projected memory semiconductor shortage through 2030

The memory semiconductor market faces a potential structural shortage that could persist until 2030. Analysts from LS Securities suggest that the combination of surging demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the physical limitations of advanced manufacturing processes may prevent supply from meeting demand for the next several years.

Key drivers include the rapid expansion of AI servers and the high demand for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is critical for AI accelerators. As manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix shift production capacity toward high-performance HBM, the supply of general-purpose memory may also be impacted, creating a divergence in product availability.

This supply constraint is also a significant factor for major chipmakers like NVIDIA. As NVIDIA prepares for its upcoming fiscal second-quarter earnings, market attention is focused on how memory shortages might affect the production and cost of next-generation platforms, such as the Rubin architecture.
