Artificial Intelligence drives shifts in hardware costs and European tech sovereignty

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving significant shifts across the technology sector, impacting hardware costs, energy consumption, and regional sovereignty. In Europe, the Linz-based startup Ablatic AI is developing Talos, a large language model designed to provide a sovereign alternative to US-based AI for sensitive industries like finance and healthcare. The model aims to ensure data privacy by training exclusively on European supercomputers.

Economically, the AI boom is contributing to rising consumer prices. Increased demand for high-bandwidth memory and GPUs in data centers is creating shortages that affect the pricing of consumer electronics, including laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles. Some analysts suggest these price pressures could persist until at least 2028. Additionally, the energy requirements for AI workloads are substantial; the International Energy Agency predicts that data center electricity demand could more than double by 2030.

In the corporate sector, IT services firm Capgemini has raised its 2026 revenue growth forecast to between 8.5% and 9.0%, citing the accelerated implementation of AI solutions in enterprise environments. Meanwhile, the industry is also navigating new infrastructure challenges, as GPU-based servers require specialized cooling and power management to integrate into existing data center landscapes.
