AI dependence on original journalism may reshape publisher economics

The news industry is facing a structural shift as generative AI moves from experimental use to impacting the economics of publishing. A report by the International News Media Association (INMA) suggests that while AI can produce infinite synthetic content, the scarcity of verified, original reporting—termed the ‘Original News Production Layer’—may grant publishers new negotiating leverage. This is evidenced by over 100 licensing deals between major AI companies and publishers, averaging approximately US$24 million each.

Industry trends indicate a transition from merely testing AI tools to managing payments, measurement, and reader engagement. While some publishers are exploring AI-driven products, such as voice news apps, others face challenges like declining web traffic due to AI-generated search overviews. Meanwhile, media executives are increasingly advocating for federal legislation to regulate unauthorized web scraping for AI training, seeking to establish formal mechanisms for value exchange between content creators and AI platforms.
