Algeria proposes international AI governance agency at UNESCO forum
The fourth UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from September 14 to 17, 2026. The event brought together 60 ministers, heads of delegations, and international organizations to discuss the transition from ethical principles to practical policy and technical implementation.
During the forum, Algeria proposed the establishment of an international agency dedicated to AI governance. Algerian officials emphasized that effective governance must address material inequalities, specifically regarding access to computing power, data infrastructure, energy, skills, models, and financing.
In Saudi Arabia, the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA) announced several initiatives, including the launch of five capacity-building frameworks for data and AI, alongside four professional certifications in data management and governance. SDAIA also recognized eight government entities for their progress in adopting AI through the National AI Index.
Additionally, the International Centre for Research and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (ICAIRE) called on academic institutions to adopt a Master's degree in AI ethics to prepare a new generation of professionals to manage the societal and regulatory implications of the technology.
