AI-designed synthetic viruses spark biosecurity concerns

Researchers in the United States have utilized an artificial intelligence system named Evo to design the complete genomes of functional viruses that do not exist in nature. Developed by a team coordinated by Brian Hie from the Arc Institute and Stanford University, the AI treats genetic code similarly to a language, training on millions of bacteriophage sequences to learn biological organization.

While the breakthrough is presented as a therapeutic advancement, it has raised significant concerns regarding biosecurity and the potential for developing biological weapons. The ability to physically synthesize these AI-designed viruses has led to calls for international regulatory agreements. However, establishing such frameworks faces challenges, including a lack of shared risk perception among global powers like China and Russia, and the difficulty of achieving meaningful consensus among multiple international participants.
