AI detection technology advances as creators face false labeling
Researchers at UCLA have developed a new deepfake screener that utilizes light to identify AI-generated media. In lab tests using standard benchmarks, the system achieved approximately 98% accuracy. This development addresses the difficulty humans face in spotting synthetic media, as studies suggest people only correctly identify AI-generated images about 52% to 55% of the time. While existing automated detectors are often slow and computationally expensive, this new approach aims to improve detection efficiency.
Separately, content creators are reporting issues with automated moderation tools on platforms like TikTok. Professional videographers have experienced instances where high-quality, authentic cinematic footage was incorrectly flagged with an “AI-generated content” label. These mislabeling errors can damage a creator's professional credibility and result in lost business opportunities, as viewers may mistake expert craftsmanship for synthetic media.
