AI detection tools emerge amid rise of AI-generated content
The rapid proliferation of AI-generated content, often referred to by experts as the ‘slopocalypse,’ has led to a surge in the use of AI detection tools as users attempt to distinguish human writing from bot-generated text.
Major platforms and companies are implementing various measures to address the issue. LinkedIn is prompting users to flag suspicious posts, while Substack has begun labeling content suspected of being AI-written. Google is developing tools to identify AI-generated images and videos, and Anthropic is implementing watermarking for text generated by Claude.
These efforts have met with resistance. Some critics argue that attempts to identify and eliminate AI authorship are ‘antiquated, punitive, and defamatory.’ As the boundary between human and machine creativity blurs, society continues to struggle with establishing norms regarding the acceptable use of artificial intelligence in writing and other creative fields.
