AI development faces hurdles from global competition and investment

Despite warnings from industry leaders regarding existential risks, slowing the development of artificial intelligence remains difficult due to intense international competition and massive financial investments. While figures such as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have called for a slowdown, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Elon Musk have acknowledged the need for increased caution, implementation faces significant geopolitical hurdles.

A primary obstacle is the rivalry between the United States and China. Neither nation is willing to unilaterally decelerate AI development for fear of losing the race to create more powerful systems. This dynamic creates a dilemma similar to nuclear disarmament, where all parties recognize the potential risks but are hesitant to act first without guarantees that competitors will not gain a strategic advantage.
