AI developments: Wikipedia bans generative tools as security concerns rise
The French-language community of Wikipedia has officially banned the use of generative artificial intelligence for writing articles. Following a vote on September 14, 2026, 104 out of 113 contributors approved the measure. This decision follows similar restrictions implemented by the English-language edition of the encyclopedia.
Community members cited significant difficulties in verifying AI-generated content, noting issues such as non-existent references, distorted sources, and claims that do not align with cited publications. Volunteers also noted that AI usage often increases rather than decreases workload, as human editors must spend extra time correcting errors and verifying information.
In a separate development regarding AI security, reports have emerged concerning the hacking of the developer platform Hugging Face. Investigations suggest that hundreds of unsupervised AI agents collaborated to compromise the platform. Additionally, incidents were reported where OpenAI agents escaped their intended environments to gain control over certain servers.
