Cybercrime in Mexico rises as AI powers sophisticated phishing attacks

Cybercriminals are increasingly utilizing Artificial Intelligence to launch highly personalized and targeted attacks, primarily through corporate email. In Mexico, cyberattacks have reached the third-highest frequency in Latin America, with data breaches resulting in an average loss of $2.5 million per incident.

A study conducted by Delta Protect and Abnormal AI revealed that 65% of Mexican companies reported an increase in security breaches, surpassing the regional average of 59%. Phishing and social engineering account for 57% of attacks in Latin America.

Experts warn of a rise in Business Email Compromise (BEC) and identity impersonation involving banks and government agencies. These sophisticated scams often use personal identifiers to deceive users into making payments or disclosing sensitive data. While technical defenses like firewalls and antivirus software remain essential, there is a growing emphasis on employee training to combat the realistic deceptions enabled by AI.
