AI-driven drones challenge traditional armored warfare
Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt has raised concerns regarding the strategic value of tanks in modern warfare due to the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence and drone technology. Schmidt argues that the massive cost asymmetry between expensive armored vehicles and relatively inexpensive, difficult-to-detect drones creates a significant vulnerability for traditional military doctrines.
In a related technological milestone, researchers from TU Delft have developed MonoRace, an autonomous racing drone capable of reaching speeds of 100 km/h. According to a study published in Science Robotics, the drone successfully competed against and defeated three former world champion pilots. Unlike previous systems, MonoRace operates without GPS or external tracking, relying instead on a single frontal camera and a motion sensor controlled by a neural network.
