AI-driven hacking threats target smart IoT devices
Smart Internet of Things (IoT) devices and household appliances are increasingly vulnerable to security breaches, a risk that may be amplified by the use of artificial intelligence to automate the discovery of software vulnerabilities.
Recent incidents highlight the potential impact of these vulnerabilities. In October, hackers targeted cooling systems at hundreds of supermarkets in France, raising temperatures to 50 degrees Celsius and causing millions of euros in food spoilage. Similar attacks on refrigeration systems subsequently affected supermarkets across seven European countries.
At a domestic level, security risks manifest through unexpected device behavior, such as a Keurig coffee maker generating approximately 1 TB of network traffic within 10 days. While such instances may stem from software errors rather than malicious intent, they underscore how connected appliances can become entry points into private networks.
