AI-driven influencers and minimalist billboards reshape advertising

Synthetic influencer profiles created with artificial intelligence are being deployed to generate empathy and drive sales. In Spain, AI‑generated characters such as Paco del Campo, who offers rural health tips, have amassed over a million followers in weeks, while other accounts like Sofia.saludencasa and Eduardo.holisticovida promote holistic products. Critics highlight cases such as the Martinmimoplants profile, which presented a young man with Down syndrome selling handmade pots, exposing ethical concerns and prompting calls for transparency. The European Union’s AI Regulation will require labeling of deepfakes and synthetic content from August 2026.

Meanwhile, The Economist has launched a minimalist outdoor advertising campaign that relies on concise copywriting rather than AI‑generated visuals. Billboards featuring slogans such as “Think outside the bot” and “actual intelligence” appear in high‑traffic locations including New York’s World Trade Center, Chicago, and London’s Leicester Square and Canary Wharf. The campaign aims to reinforce the publication’s emphasis on human analysis and encourage audiences to question automatically generated information.

Both developments illustrate a growing tension between AI‑enhanced marketing tactics and efforts to preserve authenticity and critical thinking in media consumption.
