German AI-driven startup boom sees record 3,053 new firms in first half of 2025

A study by the German Startup Association shows that 3,053 new start‑ups were founded in Germany between January and June 2025, a 52 percent increase over the previous half‑year and more than the total for 2024. Verena Pausder, the association’s managing director, said the surge is driven by artificial intelligence, which “lowers the hurdles for founding and more people are using this chance.” About one‑third of the new firms (1,038) have a clear AI focus, and the software sector leads with 844 registrations. The boom is nationwide: Berlin remains the top city with 429 start‑ups, Hamburg overtook Munich with 212, while Bavaria added 626, North Rhine‑Westphalia 539 and Baden‑Württemberg 377. Six start‑ups have achieved billion‑euro valuations, raising Germany’s total “unicorns” to 36, yet the country still lags far behind the United States, which hosts over 900 unicorns. Analysts cite Europe’s weaker capital markets and call for tax and regulatory reforms to spur venture funding.
