AI-driven misinformation targets political leaders and businesses
The digital landscape in July 2026 saw a significant rise in misinformation driven by artificial intelligence and manipulated media. Over twenty-nine distinct instances of fabricated claims were documented, targeting political leaders, religious institutions, and journalists.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a frequent target of these campaigns. Deceptions included an AI-generated fake resignation letter, digitally altered graphics regarding his public remarks, and a manipulated video falsely claiming he announced a free mobile scheme. Other incidents involved an AI-altered image misrepresenting a public interaction.
In the corporate sector, Large Language Models (LLMs) have introduced new challenges for crisis communication. In one instance, an AI tool incorrectly provided outdated promotional information to journalists, leading customers to expect free food at a quick-service restaurant. This resulted in widespread confusion and required brands to develop new strategies, such as updating non-indexed web pages to correct AI-generated search responses.
