AI-driven predictive maintenance expands in European electricity grids

Artificial‑intelligence tools for predictive maintenance are being deployed in electricity grids worldwide to detect faults and forecast equipment failures. Sensors feed real‑time data to machine‑learning models, allowing utilities to schedule upkeep only when needed, which can lower downtime and costs.

In Europe, the transition is slower. The European Commission’s 2022 Digitalisation of Energy Action Plan set out more than 20 actions to boost smart‑grid rollout, yet the International Energy Agency warns that grid investment must rise to over USD 70 billion in 2025 to keep pace with rapid low‑emission generation growth. Current spending lags, creating bottlenecks such as long connection queues and difficulty moving cheap renewable power from the EU’s south to high‑demand regions.

Industry experts note that the Middle East has adopted predictive‑maintenance solutions more extensively, while European and American utilities are catching up. They call for common standards to reduce divergent interpretations and clarify cost recovery. Finnish distribution operator Helen Electricity Network, serving 400 000 customers in Helsinki, uses AI monitoring on high‑voltage cables, transformers and substations, while Irish utility ESB reports selective implementation based on network reliability needs.
