Retailers adapt as AI-driven traffic and commerce protocols surge
The retail industry is undergoing a significant shift as generative AI alters how consumers discover and purchase products. Recent data from Adobe Digital Insights indicates that AI-driven traffic to US retail websites increased 138% year-over-year in May 2026, with AI-referred shoppers generating 53% more revenue per visit and converting at a 54% higher rate than non-AI sources.
However, a disconnect exists between AI discovery and final conversion. While AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini provide highly engaged referrals, they often direct users to brand homepages rather than specific product pages, creating a mismatch in user intent. To address this, new protocols such as the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) and Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) are being developed to allow AI agents to check stock, confirm shipping, and complete purchases directly.
Retailers like Walmart, Wayfair, and Target are navigating these changes by attempting to balance AI-driven convenience with the need to maintain direct customer relationships and data control. Maintaining consistent customer identity across fragmented platforms remains a critical challenge, as inaccurate data can lead to poor AI-driven recommendations and inconsistent user experiences.
