AI data center expansion drives shifts in power and infrastructure
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive transformation in energy and infrastructure requirements for data centers. To manage surging electricity demands, major technology companies including Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft are spearheading a shift toward 800-volt direct-current (800V DC) power architectures. This transition, supported by the Open Compute Project, aims to reduce energy losses, decrease copper usage by up to 80%, and lower annual operating expenses.
On the energy supply side, the industry is looking toward nuclear power and large-scale utility restructuring. Companies like Constellation Energy are positioning themselves as leaders in nuclear generation to serve hyperscalers, while others like Oklo focus on small modular reactors. In the United States, utility companies are undergoing mergers and acquisitions to build the capacity required to provide the hundreds of megawatts needed for single AI hubs.
Alternative and controversial solutions are also emerging. Some startups are exploring offshore data centers using floating wind turbines and subsea cooling, while others, including SpaceX and Nvidia, are investigating orbital data centers to utilize continuous solar energy. However, these space-based concepts face significant technical hurdles and environmental concerns regarding atmospheric pollution from frequent rocket launches. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of terrestrial data centers has sparked local opposition due to concerns over noise, water usage, and rising electricity costs.
