São Paulo AI traffic radars begin issuing fines on Rodoanel

AI‑equipped cameras have been installed on the South and East sections of the Rodoanel Mário Covas in São Paulo and started issuing traffic fines in July 2026. After a test phase from 12 May to 9 June, the system recorded 4,879 violations in 28 days – an average of about 168 infractions per day. The majority involved seat‑belt non‑use: 2,420 drivers (49.6%) and 1,440 passengers (29.5%). Cell‑phone use while driving accounted for 1,019 infractions (20.9%). A separate report noted 7,297 identified offenders during testing, with 72.5% for belt violations and 22.5% for cellphone use. The cameras use infrared sensors and artificial‑intelligence algorithms to detect violations 24 hours a day; images are then reviewed by the Polícia Militar Rodoviária before a ticket is issued. Concessionaire SPMAR, which manages the Rodoanel, says the technology aims to improve safety rather than raise revenue, and expects an immediate positive impact on driver behavior.
