AI error nearly triggers U.S.-China military confrontation

An error involving artificial intelligence nearly triggered a military confrontation between the United States and China. According to reports, U.S. officials were preparing to intercept a Chinese vessel after an intelligence report claimed it was transporting components for a nuclear weapons program.

Just before the planned operation, officials conducted a closer review of the report and discovered it had been compiled using a chatbot. An analyst from the U.S. Special Operations Command used the AI to process the ship's manifest, combining open-source data with classified signal intelligence. The system produced a false conclusion regarding the cargo. The analyst then used the AI again to convert these findings into a formal intelligence report distributed to high-level officials.

One source described the report as ‘completely false’ and noted that the error ‘almost started a war.’ It remains unclear whether the chatbot used was a commercial product or a government tool. The Pentagon and the U.S. Special Operations Command have not responded to requests for comment.
