AI evolution drives shifts in IPv6, Ethernet, and networking standards
The networking industry is evolving to meet the massive scale and performance demands of artificial intelligence. At the IETF 126 meeting, discussions highlighted that IPv6 and DNS will become increasingly critical in the AI era. Experts noted that the deployment of AI agents and distributed compute nodes will require the traceable, globally unique addresses provided by IPv6, as the scale of these deployments is expected to exceed the practical limits of IPv4.
In parallel, the Ethernet Alliance has announced the agenda for its 2026 Technology Exploration Forum (TEF 2026) in Mountain View, California. The forum, titled ‘The AI Future: Ethernet’, will focus on how AI is reshaping Ethernet through advancements in standards, signaling, and optical infrastructure.
Additionally, the Ultra Ethernet Consortium is working to deliver an open, high-performance communications stack for AI and high-performance computing. The recently released UE-Specification-1.0.1 includes the Ultra Ethernet Transport (UET) protocol, designed to provide high-performance connectivity similar to RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCEv2).
