AI leaders warn UN of security risks and loss of human control
Leading artificial intelligence executives and researchers are raising urgent warnings regarding the security and governance of rapidly advancing AI systems. During briefings at the United Nations Security Council, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei highlighted risks such as the loss of human control, the potential for AI to be used in biological weaponry, and the dangers of autonomous systems that could outpace institutional oversight.
Amid these warnings, internal industry shifts are occurring. Robert O’Callahan, a researcher at Google DeepMind, resigned from his position, stating that the current pace of the pursuit of superintelligence is “inherently irresponsible.” He expressed concerns over cybersecurity risks, economic disruption, and the concentration of technological power.
However, the push for regulation has met with criticism. Investor Joe Lonsdale argued that some AI firms may be using existential fear to influence public policy and create an oligopoly that entrenches their market power. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that the speed of AI development is currently exceeding the ability of governments to respond effectively.
