Anthropic researchers warn of existential risks from rapid AI development

Debate regarding the existential risks posed by artificial intelligence has intensified following warnings from former AI researchers. Jacob Coxon, a former employee at Anthropic, has publicly resigned, stating that the current direction of AI research is excessively dangerous and that companies are racing to develop superintelligent systems faster than human control mechanisms can be established.

Evan Hambinger, another researcher, estimated that there is a greater than 10% probability that advanced AI could lead to the extinction of the human species within the next decade. Potential catastrophic scenarios discussed by experts include the use of AI to develop biological weapons, the deployment of autonomous robots, or the takeover of critical infrastructure such as energy grids.

However, some experts remain skeptical. Critics suggest these warnings might serve as marketing tactics to drive interest ahead of Anthropic’s anticipated public offering. Others argue that many of the predicted threats rely on technologies that do not yet exist, though they acknowledge significant risks regarding the loss of control over autonomous agents.
