AI Expands in Healthcare: Hospitals, Clinical Trials and Training Programs

Hospitals are rapidly adopting artificial‑intelligence tools. At the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, roughly 150 AI models are deployed, including the Record Time system that trims 5‑30 minutes from each patient’s record review. The clinic is testing AI for early pancreatic‑cancer detection and atrial‑fibrillation risk assessment, and partners with Microsoft on model training. An AI‑enabled sepsis‑detection system built with Palantir at Tampa General Hospital is credited with saving 886 lives since August 2022. In Utah, an AI platform for renewing chronic‑condition prescriptions received physician approval in 72 % of cases, with 91 % concurrence.

AI is also reshaping clinical‑trial operations. By continuously analysing data from electronic health records, wearable devices and remote‑monitoring platforms, AI helps plan studies, predict risks, optimise patient recruitment, monitor trial quality and automate administrative workflows, thereby accelerating timelines and cutting costs.

Education and policy initiatives are expanding AI expertise in medicine. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi launched the second batch of its six‑month executive programme on AI in healthcare, building on a first cohort of 141 participants from six countries. At the recent AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, India’s Ministry of Health unveiled a national AI‑in‑medicine strategy. Sachin Bajpai highlighted a predictive AI model that, during a pilot covering over 300 000 U.S. patients in 21 states, identified high‑risk elderly individuals and reduced medical spending by nearly $10 million.

In Australia, aged‑care providers are integrating AI into clinical, medication and rostering systems, prompting calls for robust governance and data‑privacy safeguards. The biotech sector reports AI‑driven advances such as digital‑twin tumor models to raise clinical‑success rates and AI‑assisted gene‑editing tools that improve protein expression for therapies.

Across the United States, India and Australia, AI is moving from experimental pilots to operational tools that augment clinicians, streamline workflows and promise cost reductions in health care.
