Data centers face rising energy, water, and social opposition

The rapid expansion of data centers, driven by the surge in artificial intelligence, is creating significant environmental and social challenges globally. Experts project that global capacity demand could triple by 2030, with AI-related spending potentially reaching $7 trillion. This growth is placing immense strain on electrical grids and water resources, as medium-sized centers can consume up to 25 million liters of water annually for cooling.

In Canada, an Angus Reid survey found that 64% of respondents believe provincial governments should limit the proliferation of large data centers, citing concerns over water consumption, electricity costs, and local economic benefits. Similarly, 70% of Americans surveyed by Gallup expressed opposition to local data center construction due to environmental and quality-of-life concerns.

To manage grid stability, some utilities, particularly in the United States, are considering treating data centers as interruptible loads. In Mississippi, companies like Entergy have reportedly informed Amazon that its facilities could face disconnection during peak demand. In Europe, Spain is developing regulations to mandate sustainability and resilience requirements for these facilities.

Technological solutions are emerging to mitigate these impacts. The AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), including members like Google and NVIDIA, is working to develop mechanisms that allow AI workloads to be flexible, shifting computation to times or regions with higher energy availability.
