AI expansion drives US job growth and South Korean patent reforms
The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is reshaping labor markets and industrial policy. In the United States, the AI boom is driving job growth in sectors such as data centers, electrical work, and technical manufacturing. Since 2023, these industries have seen approximately 320,000 more jobs than general trends in construction and industry would suggest. Estimates from the Burning Glass Institute indicate that roughly one percent of all professional positions in the US—about one million jobs—can now be classified as specific ‘AI jobs,’ with higher concentrations in data science and life sciences.
In South Korea, the government is utilizing patent policy to accelerate AI development. The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is expanding its fast-track patent processing to include AI data centers and physical AI. This initiative aims to reduce the initial patent evaluation period to just one month, significantly cutting down from the current average of over 21 months for AI-related fields. This move is intended to provide startups and companies with the intellectual property protections necessary to secure investment and enter markets more rapidly.
