AI experts question claims of autonomous reasoning and self-improvement
Experts and recent research suggest that current artificial intelligence capabilities may not match the hype surrounding autonomous intelligence and recursive self-improvement.

Jordan, a prominent machine learning researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, argues that AI systems are currently imitating human intelligence through pattern recognition rather than engaging in deep cognitive reasoning or creativity. He suggests that machine learning should be viewed as a tool to augment human intelligence in fields like healthcare and commerce, rather than a competing intelligent force.
Complementing this view, a study led by researchers at Princeton University indicates that AI agents lack the judgment and creativity required to conduct open-ended, innovative research. While AI can solve specific engineering problems or complete narrow tasks, researchers found they struggle with the high-level hypothesis testing and decision-making necessary to automate the field of AI research itself.
