AI film studios emerge in Hollywood to reduce production costs

A new wave of AI-powered film studios, such as Promise, is emerging in Hollywood, utilizing generative models to create backgrounds, special effects, and synthetic performers. Backed by investors including Google and Disney, these studios aim to reduce production costs by 20 to 50 percent compared to traditional filmmaking. This shift allows for hybrid productions where human actors perform in real-time environments that are digitally augmented by AI, such as the Chinese-developed Seedance 2.5 model.

The technology is seeing rapid adoption; Netflix has stated it intends to use AI in 300 of its 1,000 titles by 2026. Additionally, the video startup Higgsfield has reached a $5.4 billion valuation, focusing on commercializing AI video for promotional content.

However, the rise of AI in cinema faces significant opposition. Prominent directors like Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro have criticized generative technology, while labor representatives have expressed concerns regarding the potential displacement of American workers in the film industry.
