AI Forecasts Boost Flood and Drought Preparedness in Cities Worldwide

Cities across Europe, Asia and North America are deploying artificial‑intelligence systems that ingest weather radar, river gauges, satellite imagery and infrastructure data to spot flood risks hours before traditional models issue warnings. Researchers at Virginia Tech explain that the same AI approaches can anticipate drought by fusing satellite soil‑moisture readings, crop health indicators and weather data. With better access to global data, AI can model early‑stage drought stress, guide irrigation schedules, reservoir releases and crop‑allocation decisions, and complement conventional physics‑based forecasts. In the United States, the ongoing drought already threatens over 100 million people, making early detection critical for agriculture and water security.
