AI-Generated Deepfake Harasses Indian Muslim Woman Samreen Ayoub

A fabricated video created with artificial intelligence portrayed Indian Muslim model Samreen Ayoub as a woman "selling her body" to Hindu men, misidentifying relatives and friends. The deepfake combined real photos from her time at Jamia Millia Islamia University with an AI‑generated voiceover, and circulated widely on Instagram, prompting the victim to describe it as "proper stalking".

Researchers from the Center for the Study of Organized Hate found over 1,300 AI‑generated images and videos targeting Muslim women, attracting more than 6.7 million interactions across X, Facebook and Instagram between May 2023 and May 2025. India's Meri Trustline helpline reported a rise in similar cases, with about 10 % of its 482 cases involving digitally manipulated material. The phenomenon is unfolding as India hosts global AI‑governance discussions such as the recent AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
