AI-generated food imagery faces backlash over uncanny advertising

The use of AI-generated imagery in food advertising is facing backlash on social media as users report an increase in uncanny and distorted food photos appearing on deli signs, menus, and flyers.

Tech reporter Sam Biddle highlighted the issue after encountering deli signage featuring surreal images, such as shrimp-shaped bagels and unnaturally smooth sandwiches. This sparked a wider conversation on platforms like X, where users shared examples of “AI flyer slop,” including burgers with honeycomb-like buns and ingredients that appear to fuse together in grotesque ways.

Critics argue that this trend represents the loss of human-centric graphic design and local culture. While communications executive Jules Mossler noted that small businesses with thin margins may turn to AI for cheaper advertising, she suggested that these tools can erase the handmade, authentic details that customers value in local establishments.
