AI-generated food images trigger consumer backlash in restaurants

Restaurants are increasingly using generative artificial intelligence to create marketing materials and menu images to combat rising food and labor costs. However, this trend is facing significant consumer backlash due to the “uncanny” and unappetizing nature of the visuals.

In one instance, a Jamaican barbecue pop-up restaurant used ChatGPT to generate images that social media users described as looking like “leather belts crawling with tiny beetles.” Similarly, a San Francisco cafe, Grind & Unwind, faced vandalism after displaying AI-generated signage that locals found unsettling.

A 2026 report from the National Restaurant Association indicates that approximately 26% of restaurant operators use AI for various tasks, including marketing, inventory management, employee scheduling, and menu optimization. While businesses view the technology as a way to protect slim profit margins, diners have expressed disgust, arguing that the distorted imagery negatively impacts the essential human experience of eating.
