AI-Generated Images Spark New Fraud Risks in E‑Commerce and Courtrooms
Artificial intelligence can now create images that are almost indistinguishable from real photographs. In online retail, synthetic photos are being used to support fraudulent refund, return and warranty claims, forcing merchants to add image‑authentication checks to the existing payment and identity verification controls.
In the legal arena, courts are already confronting AI‑generated visual evidence. Recent cases show judges dismissing fabricated AI videos and imposing sanctions, while other rulings reject objections based solely on speculation that material might be AI‑altered. Federal rulemakers are contemplating amendments that would shift the burden of authentication for AI‑generated or edited media to judges, tightening evidentiary standards.
Both sectors are therefore urged to implement stronger verification tools and procedural safeguards to combat the growing threat of AI‑produced visual fraud.
