AI-generated misinformation poses risks to election integrity

New York Attorney General Letitia James has released an updated guide to help voters identify and report AI-generated election misinformation. The guidance comes as AI-produced images, videos, and audio recordings become increasingly sophisticated, making it difficult for voters to distinguish between genuine recordings and digital forgeries. The Office of the Attorney General has also documented instances where AI chatbots provided incorrect information regarding voting deadlines, requirements, and poll site locations.

Research from the USC Information Sciences Institute suggests that autonomous AI agents have the capacity to coordinate online political campaigns with minimal human instruction. These agents can collaborate to promote specific candidates and amplify hashtags, creating scalable and adaptive networks of influence. This phenomenon, described as ‘AI swarms,’ allows for the creation of original content tailored to specific demographics.

Conversely, new research published in Royal Society Open Science suggests that AI could be used to combat misinformation through ‘pre-bunking.’ A study of over 4,200 US registered voters found that AI-generated pre-bunking articles—which expose individuals to weakened versions of misinformation alongside accurate facts—significantly reduced belief in false election claims. This inoculation method helped participants resist persuasive false narratives even a week after exposure.
