While short-form AI dramas have become common on social media, the series ‘Beyond Wukong’ marks a major milestone as the first large-scale production where human involvement in the creative process was minimal. The series, consisting of thirty 40-minute episodes, premiered on Hunan Satellite Television and achieved top ratings among regional broadcasters, causing shares of production company Mango TV to rise.

The rapid production capabilities of AI allow for complex series to be completed in as little as three months. This efficiency drastically reduces costs by eliminating the need for traditional actors, technicians, and crews, leading to the emergence of new roles like ‘card pullers’ who combine prompt engineering with visual editing.

However, the shift has sparked debate. While some viewers praise the visuals, others express concerns regarding the loss of human artistic input and the potential for millions of jobs in the television industry to be displaced. Some current productions are even being modified in real-time based on viewer feedback as they are released.
