AI content generation reaches 64% of new internet material
Research from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Oxford Internet Institute indicates that artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the digital landscape. Approximately 64 percent of new internet content is now generated by AI. This trend has fueled the ‘dead internet theory,’ suggesting that automated systems are increasingly dominating online spaces over human users.
Social media platforms are particularly affected, with an estimated 52 percent of content generated with AI assistance. Projections suggest this figure could reach 90 percent by the end of 2026. Visual content shows even higher saturation, with roughly 79 percent of images on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest allegedly being AI-generated. On LinkedIn, analysis shows that 53.7 percent of long-form posts are likely AI-authored.
Data from Cloudflare reveals that AI bots have generated more internet traffic than humans for the first time. However, concerns regarding information reliability persist, as studies suggest nearly one in three AI-generated responses is inaccurate. Researchers also note stylistic shifts in AI text, such as a doubling of dash usage and a 63 percent increase in the use of the Oxford comma.
