AI expansion drives surge in nuclear energy and power infrastructure demand

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is driving a massive surge in electricity demand, forcing a strategic shift in energy procurement and infrastructure development. To support the continuous, high-load requirements of AI training clusters and hyperscale data centers, technology companies are increasingly looking toward nuclear energy as a reliable source of baseload power. This includes interest in conventional fission, small modular reactors (SMRs), and advanced fusion technologies.

In the United States, data center electricity consumption is projected to rise from 4% in 2023 to 9% by 2030. To mitigate this, hyperscalers are negotiating long-term contracts for nuclear power to ensure stability and reduce price volatility.

Simultaneously, infrastructure providers are innovating to manage grid constraints. CyrusOne is implementing modular, scalable power substation designs, such as its FRA6 facility in Frankfurt, to standardize grid connections. Additionally, AI-driven energy storage systems are being deployed to optimize energy distribution and integrate renewable sources, offering efficiencies of up to 90% and providing alternatives to traditional diesel generators in remote or industrial settings.
